Ordering Events with "Áður en"

To specify that one event happens before another, use the conjunction áður en (before). Word order inside the time clause remains standard (subject followed by verb).

You need to peel the potato before we cook it.
Þú þarft að skræla kartöfluna áður en við eldum hana.
I peel the apple before the child eats it.
Ég skræli eplið áður en barnið borðar það.

Sequencing with "Eftir að"

To express that an event happens after something else, use the conjunction eftir að.

He boils the vegetables after he fries the meat in a pan.
Hann sýður grænmetið eftir að hann steikir kjötið á pönnu.
We wash the dishes after we eat.
Við vöskum upp eftir að við borðum.

Cooking Instructions

These time clauses are very useful for giving multi-step instructions, such as explaining a recipe.

The pan needs to be hot before we fry the fish.

We clean the oven before we bake the cake.
Við þrífum ofninn áður en við bökum kökuna.
She stirs the soup after she puts the salt in it.
