When bragging about a toy dinosaur collection, saying it is "the biggest" might not be enough—you want to say it is "the very biggest" or "the biggest of all." In Icelandic, you can easily intensify a superlative adjective by placing the word allra directly in front of it.
The Genitive Plural "allra"
allra is the genitive plural form of allur (all) and translates to "of all." It acts as an invariable intensifier, meaning allra itself never changes endings to match the gender or number of the noun. It simply stays right before the adjective.
| This dinosaur is the very biggest! | Þessi risaeðla er allra stærst! |
| I was playing with the animals and this tail is the most powerful of all. | Ég var að leika mér með dýrin og þessi hali er allra öflugastur. |
Using "allra" with Nouns
You can use allra whether the adjective stands alone or directly modifies a noun. allra stays the same even when the adjective changes its declension.
| My favorite is this most awesome dinosaur of all. | Eftirlætið mitt er þessi allra geggjaðasta risaeðla. |
| I was showing him the most powerful dinosaur of all. | Ég var að sýna honum allra öflugustu risaeðluna. |
Answering with Enthusiasm
allra is perfect for adding emphasis and enthusiastically answering questions about your favorite things.
| Isn't she dangerous? Yes, she is the most dangerous of all! | Er hún ekki hættuleg? Jú, hún er allra hættulegust! |
| Isn't this toy fun? Yes, it is the most fun of all! | Er þetta dót ekki skemmtilegt? Jú, það er allra skemmtilegast! |
