The subjunctive mood in Icelandic isn't just for hypotheticals, doubts, or wishes. It is also frequently used in relative clauses following superlative expressions.
When you describe something as "the most dangerous stunt that I have performed", the verb "have" in the relative clause takes the subjunctive (hafi). This highlights that the statement is a subjective extreme—it is the most dangerous one in your personal experience.
Notice in these examples how the present subjunctive form of hafa is hafi for ég, þú, hann, hún, and það.
| This is the most dangerous stunt that I have performed. | Þetta er hættulegasta áhættuatriðið sem ég hafi framkvæmt. |
| He is the bravest stunt double that I have met. | Hann er hugrakkasti áhættuleikarinn sem ég hafi hitt. |
| This is the biggest jump that any daredevil has attempted. | Þetta er stærsta stökkið sem nokkur ofurhugi hafi reynt. |
First, Last, and Few
This rule extends beyond superlatives. Adjectives that limit or single things out as unique extremes—such as fyrsti (first), síðasti (last), or fáir (few)—also trigger the subjunctive mood in the relative clause that follows.
| This is the first burning car that I have jumped over. | Þetta er fyrsti logandi bíllinn sem ég hafi stokkið yfir. |
| This is the last daredevil who has neither hesitated nor been afraid. | Þetta er síðasti ofurhuginn sem hafi hvorki hikað né verið hræddur. |
Beyond "Hafa"
While hafi is very common in these "that I have ever..." structures, the rule applies to any verb in the relative clause.
You will also see the verb vera (to be) using its subjunctive forms sé (singular) and séu (plural), as well as regular verbs like vita (to know) or brotna (to break) using their present subjunctive endings (which typically end in -i for singular subjects).
| There are few stunts that are as perilous. | Það eru fá áhættuatriði sem séu jafn háskaleg. |
| Our jump is much more perilous than anything else that I know of. | Stökkið okkar er miklu háskalegra en nokkuð annað sem ég viti um. |
| This is the last unique burning chair that breaks. | Þetta er síðasti einstæði logandi stóllinn sem brotni. |
