It also indicates a lack of ability or power, as seen in vanmáttur (powerlessness).

Finally, van- frequently appears in economic or systemic contexts. It transforms words like mat (estimation) into vanmat (underestimation) and þróun (development) into vanþróun (underdevelopment). It is also heavily used for financial deficiencies, such as vanskil (arrears or unpaid debts).
