Numbers 11 to 20
Here are the numbers from 11 to 20 in Icelandic. Notice how 13 through 19 end in -tán or -tján, similar to the English suffix "-teen".
- 11: ellefu
- 12: tólf
- 13: þrettán
- 14: fjórtán
- 15: fimmtán
- 16: sextán
- 17: sautján
- 18: átján
- 19: nítján
- 20: tuttugu
Unlike the numbers 1 through 4, the numbers 11 through 20 are completely indeclinable. They never change their form to match the gender or case of the noun they describe.
Talking About Age
To state someone's age, use the verb vera (to be) followed by the number and ára (the genitive plural of ár, meaning "years").
| My son is eleven years old. | Sonur minn er ellefu ára. |
| Their daughter is twelve years old. | Dóttir þeirra er tólf ára. |
| Your sister is nineteen years old. | Systir þín er nítján ára. |
Counting Things and People
Because these numbers never change form, simply place them directly before any noun to talk about quantities, or use them on their own when the context is clear.
| She has eleven horses. | Hún á ellefu hesta. |
| We were twelve at work. | Við vorum tólf í vinnunni. |
| There are thirteen chairs in the room. | Það eru þrettán stólar í herberginu. |
| We are seventeen girls in the group. | Við erum sautján stelpur í hópnum. |
| He has twenty old cars. | Hann á tuttugu gamla bíla. |
