In Icelandic, you can express unlimited possibilities by adding sem er (literally: "which is" or "that is") to question words. This creates free-choice pronouns corresponding to English words starting with any- or ending in -ever.
Hvað sem er & Hvar sem er (Anything and Anywhere)
hvað sem er means "anything" or "whatever," while hvar sem er means "anywhere" or "wherever":

| A hungry tourist eats anything. | Svangur ferðamaður borðar hvað sem er. |
| We can sleep anywhere. | Við getum sofið hvar sem er. |
Hver sem er (Anyone)
hver sem er means "anyone" or "whoever."
| Anyone can show up spontaneously. | Hver sem er getur mætt fyrirvaralaust. |
The question word part (hver) declines based on its grammatical role, while the sem er part always stays exactly the same. For example, the preposition með requires the dative case, changing hver to hverjum:

Embracing the Random
These free-choice pronouns are perfectly suited for talking about spontaneous travel. Following your wanderlust (ævintýraþráin) might mean taking an unplanned (óplanaður) trip, a random (handahófskenndur) detour (útúrdúr), or doing things without warning (fyrirvaralaust).
| The wanderlust makes the journey random. | Ævintýraþráin gerir ferðalagið handahófskennt. |
