The Tens (30 to 100)

The tens from 30 up to 100 end in -tíu, except for 100 (hundrað).

  • 30: þrjátíu
  • 40: fjörutíu
  • 50: fimmtíu
  • 60: sextíu
  • 70: sjötíu
  • 80: áttatíu
  • 90: níutíu
  • 100: hundrað

The tens are indeclinable; they do not change form to match gender or case.

There are thirty chairs inside.
Það eru þrjátíu stólar inni.
Forty Icelanders fly from Akureyri today.
Fjörutíu Íslendingar fljúga frá Akureyri í dag.
Are fifty or sixty boxes inside?
Eru fimmtíu eða sextíu kassar inni?
Does this tomato cost a hundred or ninety kronur?
Kostar þessi tómatur hundrað eða níutíu krónur?

Compound Numbers

Form compound numbers with the tens place, og (and), and the ones place (e.g., þrjátíu og fimm for 35). When the final digit is 5 or higher, the entire number is indeclinable.

Here are thirty-eight students.
Hér eru þrjátíu og átta nemendur.
The bag costs forty-five kronur.
Pokinn kostar fjörutíu og fimm krónur.
This pen costs sixty-nine kronur.
Þessi penni kostar sextíu og níu krónur.
I have one hundred and nine kronur.
Ég á hundrað og níu krónur.

Compounds Ending in 1, 2, 3, or 4

If a compound number ends in 1, 2, 3, or 4, that final digit must decline to match the noun's gender and case, while the tens place stays the same.

He owns forty-two books.
Hann á fjörutíu og tvær bækur.

Because bækur (books) is feminine, the number 2 takes its feminine form (tvær).

We see sixty-three birds.
Við sjáum sextíu og þrjá fugla.
Does he have eighty-two tickets?
Er hann með áttatíu og tvo miða?
She has ninety-four packages.
Hún er með níutíu og fjóra pakka.

In these examples, the nouns (fugla, miða, pakka) are masculine and in the accusative case, so the final digits take their masculine accusative forms (þrjá, tvo, and fjóra).
