Clauses of location (þar sem)

Playing hide-and-seek requires the perfect secret place. To add details about a specific physical location—like explaining why a hiding spot is so good—use the phrase þar sem (where).

where (location)
þar sem

In Icelandic, þar sem (literally "there as") links a place to the action happening there, just like "where" in English. Place it right after the location you are describing.

The boy crouches laughing in the attic, where it is darkest.
Strákurinn húkir hlæjandi í risinu, þar sem myrkrið er mest.
You must keep quiet in the broom closet, where nobody sees you.
Þú verður að þegja í kústaskápnum, þar sem enginn sér þig.

Þar sem can directly follow a noun acting as the subject of the sentence, or attach to a location at the end of a prepositional phrase.

The secret place where she is hiding is very small.
Leynistaðurinn þar sem hún felur sig er mjög lítill.
The cat hides behind the window curtain, where the dog is sleeping.
Kötturinn felur sig á bak við gluggatjaldið, þar sem hundurinn sefur.
Run into the broom closet, where it is dark!
Hlauptu inn í kústaskápinn, þar sem er dimmt!
