Questions & Answers about Вчитель порадив мені читати книгу щоранку.
What’s the difference between the verbs радити and порадити, and why is порадив used here?
радити is the imperfective verb “to advise” (ongoing or repeated advising), while порадити is its perfective counterpart (a single, completed act of giving advice). In our sentence the teacher gave one piece of advice at a specific time, so the perfective порадити is used. The past masculine singular form of порадити is порадив.
Why does порадив end in –в, and how would it change if the teacher were female?
In Ukrainian past tense, verbs agree with the subject’s gender and number.
• Masculine singular: –в → порадив
• Feminine singular: –ла → порадила
• Neuter singular: –ло → порадило
• Plural (all genders): –ли → порадили
Since вчитель is masculine, we use порадив. If it were вчителька, you’d say порадила.
Why is мені in the dative case, not мене (accusative)?
The verb порадити requires the person receiving advice to be in the dative case (“to whom?”), so мені (“to me”). мене is the accusative form (“me” as a direct object), but here “me” is an indirect object of “advise,” hence dative.
