Questions & Answers about Дух живе в серці.
What is the basic grammatical structure of the sentence Дух живе в серці?
The sentence is built with a straightforward subject-predicate structure. Дух is the subject (meaning spirit), живе is the predicate (the third-person singular present form of жити, meaning lives), and в серці is a prepositional phrase indicating location (in the heart). Notice that Ukrainian does not use articles, so there's no equivalent of "the" before Дух.
How is the verb живе formed, and what does it tell us about the subject?
The verb живе comes from the verb жити (to live) and is conjugated in the third-person singular present tense. This form agrees with the singular subject Дух, showing standard subject-verb agreement in Ukrainian. It indicates an ongoing or habitual action corresponding to "lives" in English.
Why is there no article before Дух, unlike in the English phrase “The spirit lives in the heart”?
Ukrainian does not use definite or indefinite articles. The noun Дух stands alone without any article, and its meaning is understood from context. This is a common feature in many Slavic languages, where the role of articles is either absent or expressed differently.
What is the function of the preposition в in the phrase в серці, and how does it affect the noun серце?
