Questions & Answers about Başım ağrıyor.
What is the literal breakdown of the sentence?
- baş = head
- -ım = my (1st person singular possessive)
- ağrı- = to ache, to hurt
- -yor = present continuous/progressive marker Together: Baş-ım ağrı-yor = My head is aching (i.e., I have a headache).
Why does it use the possessive suffix -ım on baş? Why not just say Benim baş ağrıyor?
In Turkish, body parts are usually marked with a possessive suffix to show who they belong to. So it must be başım (my head), not just baş. If you include the pronoun, it must agree: Benim başım ağrıyor. Saying Benim baş ağrıyor is ungrammatical.
Do I need to say Benim at all?
Why is it ağrıyor and not ağrıyorum?
