Questions & Answers about Informamos a la directora.
What tense is informamos here?
Informamos can mean either we inform (present) or we informed (preterite/simple past). In this verb form, the nosotros present and preterite look the same for regular -ar verbs.
Context tells you which one it is:
- Hoy informamos a la directora = Today we inform / are informing the director
- Ayer informamos a la directora = Yesterday we informed the director
Why is there no nosotros in the sentence?
Spanish often leaves out subject pronouns because the verb ending already shows who the subject is.
Here, -amos tells you it is we.
So:
- Informamos a la directora = normal, natural Spanish
- Nosotros informamos a la directora = also correct, but usually used for emphasis, contrast, or clarity
- Nosotros informamos a la directora, no ellos = We informed the director, not them
Why is there an a before la directora?
This is the personal a. Spanish uses a before a specific person who is the object of the verb.
So:
- Informamos a la directora = the object is a person
- Informamos el cambio = the object is a thing, so no personal a
This a is not usually translated into English.
Why do we say la directora and not just directora?
Spanish often uses the definite article with job titles or roles when talking about a person.
So a la directora is the normal way to say the director / headmistress in this kind of sentence.
Compare:
- Informamos a la directora = talking about her
- Directora, ¿tiene un momento? = directly addressing her, so no article
Also compare:
- Es directora = She is a director
- Es la directora del colegio = She is the director of the school
Is directora feminine? How would this change for a male director?
Yes. Directora is the feminine form of director.
If the person were male, you would say:
- Informamos al director
Notice the contraction:
- a + el = al
But there is no contraction with la:
- a la directora stays a la directora
Is informar the same as decir?
Not exactly.
Informar is more formal and often sounds official, professional, or administrative. It is closer to to inform, to notify, or sometimes to brief.
Decir is more general and everyday: to say / to tell.
So:
- Informamos a la directora sounds formal or official
- Le dijimos a la directora sounds more everyday: We told the director
Both can be correct, but they do not always have the same tone.
If I replace a la directora with a pronoun, do I use la or le?
A learner will often expect la, and that is a good standard choice:
- La informamos
That is because the person being informed is commonly treated as the direct object in this structure.
However, in Spain you may also hear le in real usage, especially in formal language or in areas where leísmo is common:
- Le informamos
So for learning purposes:
- La informamos = a safe, standard grammatical choice
- Le informamos = also something you may hear in Spain
How do I say what we informed the director about?
A very common pattern is:
- informar a alguien de algo
- informar a alguien sobre algo
Examples:
- Informamos a la directora del problema = We informed the director about the problem
- Informamos a la directora sobre los cambios = We informed the director about the changes
- La informamos de que llegaríamos tarde = We informed her that we would arrive late
Notice this contraction too:
- de + el = del
So de el problema becomes del problema.
