What does odvešću mean, and why is it one word?
Odvešću means I will take or I’ll bring/take someone to a place, depending on context.
It is a future-tense form of odvesti. Serbian often combines the future auxiliary ću with the verb, so instead of saying ja ću odvesti, you can get the compact form odvešću.
So:
- odvesti = to take someone somewhere
- ću = I will
- odvešću = I will take
This is a very normal Serbian form.
Why isn’t there a separate word for I?
Because Serbian often leaves out subject pronouns when the verb already makes the subject clear.
In odvešću, the ending already tells you it means I will, so ja is unnecessary unless you want emphasis.
- Odvešću prijatelja kući. = neutral, natural
- Ja ću odvesti prijatelja kući. = also correct, with a little more emphasis on I
This is similar to Spanish or Italian, where the verb can already show who is doing the action.
