Why does it say Мне нравится instead of Я люблю / Мне люблю?
Нравиться works differently from любить.
- Мне is dative and marks the person who experiences the feeling (literally: To me, it is pleasing…).
- The thing/action that is pleasing is the grammatical “subject” (here it’s the action возвращаться…).
You can also say Я люблю возвращаться… (I love returning…), but Мне нравится… is usually softer/less strong than Я люблю….
Why is нравится singular, even though there’s a whole action after it?
Because the “thing” that pleases you is treated as a single idea: the action возвращаться в тихий парк после работы. So Russian uses нравится (3rd person singular).
Compare:
- Мне нравится этот парк. (one thing → singular)
- Мне нравятся эти парки. (plural things → plural)
Why is возвращаться an infinitive, not something like an -ing form?
