Why does мне appear in the dative case here? Why not я?
In Мне удалось открыть файл…, the construction удалось + infinitive expresses “I managed to / I succeeded in …” but grammatically it’s impersonal: literally “To me it succeeded to open the file.”
So the “person who succeeds” is put in the dative: мне, тебе, ему, ей, нам, вам, им.
