Why do we say У меня есть instead of Я имею to mean I have?
In everyday Russian, possession is normally expressed with у + [person in genitive] + есть, not with the verb иметь.
- У меня есть отдельный блокнот… = I have a separate notebook…
- Literally: At me there is a separate notebook…
The verb иметь (to have) exists, but:
- It sounds formal, official, or sometimes bookish.
- It’s used in set expressions (e.g. иметь право – to have the right).
- Saying Я имею отдельный блокнот для грамматики is grammatically correct, but sounds unnatural/odd in normal conversation.
So for “I have X,” you almost always use У меня есть X in spoken and neutral written Russian.
