Why are both никуда and не used? Isn’t that a double negative?
Russian uses negative concord: negative words like никуда, никто, ничего, нигде must be paired with не on the verb. So Я никуда не иду is correct; without не it’s ungrammatical. You can also say Я не иду никуда—same meaning, slightly different emphasis.
What’s the difference between никуда and нигде?
- никуда answers where-to (direction). Use it with motion: Сегодня я никуда не иду.
- нигде answers where (location). Use it with stative verbs: Его нигде нет, Он нигде не работает.
Think: куда/никуда = to where/nowhere to; где/нигде = where/nowhere.
Why is it иду and not еду?
- идти/пойти = go (usually on foot) or go to an event/destination as an activity: идти в кино, идти на работу (even if you’ll ride there).
- ехать/поехать = go by vehicle, focusing on transport: Сегодня я никуда не еду.
Both can be correct; choose based on whether you’re talking about the event (идти) or the means of transport (ехать).
Can the present иду refer to the future?
Yes. With verbs of motion, present can express a scheduled/near-future plan: Завтра иду к врачу. In the sentence with сегодня, it means a plan for today. With most other verbs, Russian uses a future form instead.
What’s the difference between не иду and не пойду?
- не иду (imperfective present) = I’m not going (today/now); a plan or state.
- не пойду (perfective future) = I will not go (even once); often a refusal or firm decision.
Example: Пойдёшь с нами? — Нет, не пойду.
Why not не хожу?
ходить is multidirectional/habitual. Я никуда не хожу means I don’t go anywhere (as a rule). Сегодня я никуда не иду is just for today. Note that я не хожу can also mean I don’t/can’t walk (e.g., due to injury), so context matters.
Can I drop я? What word orders are natural?
Yes. Common options:
- Сегодня я никуда не иду.
- Я сегодня никуда не иду.
- Сегодня никуда не иду. (pronoun dropped)
- Я никуда сегодня не иду.
All are correct; word order fine-tunes emphasis.
What exactly is никуда grammatically?
It’s an adverb built from куда (to where) with negative ни-. It doesn’t decline. The trio is:
- где → нигде (location)
- куда → никуда (to-where)
- откуда → ниоткуда (from-where)
Is Иду никуда ever correct without не?
No, not in this meaning. Negative adverbs like никуда require не on the verb: Я никуда не иду. A different, figurative set phrase exists with a preposition: идти в никуда (to go into the void).
How do никуда and некуда differ?
- никуда
- не negates the action: Я никуда не иду.
- некуда states there’s no possible destination: Мне некуда идти (there is no place to go). They are not interchangeable.
How can I add the sense of “not at all”?
Use intensifiers:
