Questions & Answers about На пульте есть кнопка включения и кнопка выключения.
What case is пульте, and why is на used instead of в?
пульте is the prepositional singular of пульт (remote control). In Russian, the prepositional case with на expresses where something is located on or at a surface or device. So на пульте literally means “on the remote,” just like English “on the remote.”
What does есть do in this sentence?
Here есть is an existential verb meaning “there is”/“there are.” It’s used to state the existence of something. So На пульте есть кнопка включения… means “On the remote there is an on-button….” In casual Russian you can also drop есть and still be understood, but есть makes the existence explicit.
Why are включения and выключения in the genitive case?
In Russian you often describe the function of a button with a noun governed by genitive. Grammatically, you ask “кнопка чего?” (“button of what?”), and the answer takes genitive. Hence кнопка включения (“button of turning-on”) and кнопка выключения (“button of turning-off”).
Why use verbal nouns like включения instead of infinitives or для включения?
