Questions & Answers about Я изучаю историю.
What does изучаю mean in this sentence?
изучаю is the first-person singular present form of the imperfective verb изучать. It means “I study” or “I am studying,” with the nuance of systematic or in-depth learning (as opposed to a one-time glance).
Why is изучаю in this particular form?
Russian verbs change their endings according to person and number. For изучать (first conjugation), the present tense goes:
- я изучаю
- ты изучаешь
- он/она изучает
…and so on. Here, изучаю shows that the subject is “I.”
Why is историю in the accusative case?
The verb изучать is transitive and takes a direct object in the accusative. Feminine nouns ending in -я form the singular accusative by replacing -я with -ю. So история (nominative) → историю (accusative).
Why is there no preposition before историю?
In Russian, many transitive verbs (like изучать) govern a bare noun in the accusative without any preposition. English also drops the preposition here (“I study history”), so Russian follows the same pattern with case marking instead.
