Questions & Answers about eiga o mimasen ka.

What is the function of を in 映画を見ませんか？

を is the direct-object particle. It marks 映画 as the thing being watched. Without を, the listener wouldn’t know what you intend to “see.”

Why is the verb in the negative form 見ませんか instead of a positive form like 見ますか?

In Japanese, the negative-question form ～ませんか is a conventional way to make an invitation or suggestion. Literally it’s “Won’t you watch…?” but idiomatically it means “Shall we watch…?” or “Would you like to watch…?” A positive 見ますか would simply ask “Do you watch…?” and sounds odd as an invitation.

How does ～ませんか differ from ～ましょうか when making suggestions?

• ～ませんか invites the listener to join you in an activity (“Won’t you…?” = “Shall we…?”).
• ～ましょうか is the speaker offering to do something, sometimes regardless of the listener (“Shall I…?”) or “Shall we…?” but with more emphasis on the speaker’s willingness.

So 映画を見ませんか？ is “Shall we watch a movie?” together, whereas 映画を見ましょうか？ could mean “Shall I watch a movie (for you)?” or “Shall we (you and I) watch?” but is less natural as an invitation.

Can I say 映画見ませんか？ without を in casual speech?
