Why is に used after アパート?

に marks the place where someone lives, exists, or is located in this kind of sentence.

What does -ている / -ています mean here?

Here, -ている shows a state that continues over time.

With some verbs, -ている means an action is happening right now:

食べている = is eating

But with other verbs, it describes a resulting or ongoing state:

結婚している = is married
知っている = knows
住んでいる = lives

So 住んでいます does not usually mean is in the middle of moving in right now. It means lives or is living there as an ongoing condition.

How is 住んでいます formed from 住む?

It comes from the verb 住む.

て-form: 住んで
Add います: 住んでいます

Why んで?

For many -む, -ぶ, and -ぬ verbs, the て-form changes like this:

読む → 読んで
遊ぶ → 遊んで
死ぬ → 死んで

Why is there no subject like 私は?

Japanese often leaves out the subject when it is clear from context.

Does アパート mean the same thing as English apartment?

Not exactly.

アパート is a loanword from English, but in Japanese it usually refers to a relatively modest apartment building, often smaller or less expensive.

Japanese also has:

マンション = an apartment building or condo-style building, often more modern or sturdier than an アパート

So the meanings do not match English perfectly.

Very roughly:

アパート = small rental apartment / apartment building
マンション = larger or more solid apartment/condo building

This is a cultural vocabulary point, not a grammar point, but learners often wonder about it.

Why is the sentence written with spaces here?

The spaces are just for learners.

Normal Japanese is usually written without spaces, so this sentence would normally appear as:

アパートに住んでいます。

Textbooks and beginner materials sometimes insert spaces to make it easier to see the words and particles:

アパート　に　住んで　います。

But in standard Japanese writing, those spaces are generally not used.

Can this sentence be written with kanji?
