Why is it az and not a?
Both a and az mean the. Hungarian chooses between them based on the following sound:
- a before a consonant sound
- az before a vowel sound
Since internet-előfizetés starts with i, Hungarian uses az: az internet-előfizetés.
Why is there no word for is in the sentence?
In Hungarian, the verb to be is usually omitted in the present tense, third person when you are saying that something is something or is a certain way.
So:
- Az internet-előfizetés új. = The internet subscription is new.
This is completely normal Hungarian. English needs is, but Hungarian does not here.
Why does új come after the noun instead of before it?
Because here új is not just an adjective inside a noun phrase; it is the predicate adjective of the sentence.
Compare:
- az új internet-előfizetés = the new internet subscription
- Az internet-előfizetés új. = The internet subscription is new.
So when új comes before the noun, it directly modifies it. When it comes after, it is part of the statement about the noun.
