Questions & Answers about Wir müssen jetzt nach Hause gehen.
Why is the verb gehen at the end?
Because müssen is a modal verb. In main clauses with a modal, the conjugated modal goes in the “verb-second” slot and the main verb stays in the infinitive at the end: Wir (slot 1) müssen (slot 2) … gehen (final).
Can I leave out gehen and just say Wir müssen jetzt nach Hause?
Yes. That is very common and perfectly standard: Ich/Wir muss/müssen (jetzt) nach Hause. The idea of “going” is understood. Including gehen is also fine; it’s just a bit more explicit.
What’s the difference between nach Hause and zu Hause?
- nach Hause = motion towards home (direction): Wir gehen nach Hause.
- zu Hause = being at home (location): Wir sind zu Hause.
- Compare: ins Haus means “into the (physical) house/building,” not necessarily your home.
Why is Hause capitalized and why the extra -e?
