In Dutch you normally don’t use zijn (to be) to locate physical objects the way you do in English. Instead you pick a posture-verb that matches how the object “sits” or “stands.” A weegschaal (scale) is upright on its legs, so it “stands” – hence staat.
When should I use liggen instead of staan for location?
Use liggen for objects that lie flat or are positioned horizontally. For example:
- Het boek ligt op de tafel.
- De krant ligt op de bank.
If the same objects stood upright (e.g. books on a shelf), you’d say staan.
Why is it op de vloer? Could I use in de vloer or aan de vloer?
- op de vloer = “on top of the floor,” the surface you stand on.
- in de vloer would mean “inside the floor,” which doesn’t fit.
