Questions & Answers about De pomp staat in de kelder.
Why is de used before pomp and kelder?
Both pomp and kelder are common-gender nouns in Dutch, so they take the definite article de. Dutch nouns are classified as either de-words (common) or het-words (neuter). Unfortunately there aren’t foolproof rules, so you usually learn the article together with each noun.
What does kelder mean and how is it used?
kelder means basement or cellar. It’s a de-word, so you say de kelder for “the basement” and een kelder for “a basement.” You use in de kelder to indicate something is located inside that space.
Why is staat used instead of is or ligt?
In Dutch we often choose a location verb over the copula zijn (is):
- staan (= to stand) is used for objects in an upright position. A pump “stands.”
- liggen (= to lie) is used for objects resting horizontally.
If you wanted a more formal “is located,” you could use bevinden: De pomp bevindt zich in de kelder.
Can I change the word order to In de kelder staat de pomp?
Yes. Dutch follows the V2 rule: the finite verb stays in second position. So if you open with the prepositional phrase In de kelder, the verb staat still comes next, then the subject de pomp.
Could I say Er staat een pomp in de kelder?
Yes, that means “There is a pump in the basement.”
Here er introduces an indefinite subject (een pomp) and triggers the verb–subject inversion. With a definite subject like de pomp, you normally wouldn’t use er in that construction.
Why is the preposition in used? Can I say op de kelder or naar de kelder?
- in indicates location inside.
- op de kelder would imply “on the basement,” which doesn’t make sense.
- naar de kelder means “to the basement,” indicating movement toward it.
Since the pump is simply located inside, you use in.
