Questions & Answers about De mensen lopen in het park.
Why do we say De mensen instead of just mensen?
In Dutch, using de before mensen makes the group of people specific, much like saying the people in English. If you omit de, the sentence becomes more general, referring to people in general rather than a particular group.
Why do we use in the park rather than another preposition like op or bij?
The preposition in is used because it indicates that the people are physically inside or within the boundaries of the park. In English, you would similarly say in the park to describe that location. Using op (on) or bij (near) would place them on or near the park, which changes the meaning.
Is park a de-word or a het-word in Dutch?
Park is a het-word, which is why we say in het park. Many singular neuter nouns in Dutch take het rather than de.
