Questions & Answers about Der Duft der neuen Essenz zeigt vielerlei Nuancen.
Why doesn't vielerlei have an adjective ending to match the plural noun Nuancen?
Words ending in the suffix -erlei (like vielerlei, allerlei, zweierlei) are invariant adjectives. This means they are "frozen" and never change their endings to match the case, gender, or number of the noun they describe.
What is the exact difference in meaning between viele Nuancen and vielerlei Nuancen here?
Viele Nuancen simply refers to a large quantity ("many nuances"). By adding the -erlei suffix, vielerlei Nuancen emphasizes the variety or diversity of the scent—meaning "many different kinds of nuances."
Why is it der neuen Essenz if Essenz is a feminine noun? Shouldn't it be die?
This is a great refresher on the genitive case, which is used here to show possession ("the scent of the new essence"). In the genitive case, the feminine definite article die changes to der. Because a definite article is used, the adjective neu takes the weak ending -en, becoming neuen.
