Questions & Answers about Infolge des hohen Blutverlusts ist der Junge sehr schwach.
Why is infolge used here instead of wegen?
Infolge specifically highlights a direct consequence or result ('as a result of'), whereas wegen is a more general 'because of'. Both take the genitive case and could be used here, but infolge emphasizes the strict cause-and-effect relationship of the blood loss leading to weakness.
Why does the verb ist come immediately after Blutverlusts?
The entire prepositional phrase Infolge des hohen Blutverlusts acts as a single block occupying position 1 in the sentence. Because German main clauses require the conjugated verb in position 2, ist directly follows the phrase, pushing the subject (der Junge) to position 3.
Why does the adjective hohen have an -en ending?
The preposition infolge triggers the genitive case. Because the noun phrase has a definite article (des), the adjective must use the weak declension ending, which is always -en for masculine genitive.
Is it also correct to write Blutverlustes with an extra 'e'?
Yes! For masculine and neuter genitive nouns, you add either -s or -es. With multi-syllable compound nouns like Blutverlust, the shorter -s is very common and natural, but -es is also perfectly correct and just sounds slightly more formal.
