Questions & Answers about Das Vorspiel wäre nicht einfach, geschweige denn die erste Probe.
Why is there a nicht in the first part of the sentence?
The connector geschweige denn means 'let alone' or 'much less,' and it strictly requires a preceding negative statement. You have to establish that the first thing is not true or not happening (here, nicht einfach) to emphasize that the second thing is even less likely.
Do I need to include a verb after geschweige denn?
No, you can leave it out. Because geschweige denn is a coordinating conjunction, it links equal parts of a sentence without changing the word order. Just like in English, you can drop the repeated words. The full thought is geschweige denn (wäre) die erste Probe (einfach), but dropping the repeated verb and adjective sounds much more natural.
I thought das Vorspiel meant 'prelude'. How do we know it means 'audition' here?
Context is key! While das Vorspiel literally means 'pre-play' and often translates to 'prelude' (or romantic 'foreplay'), in the performing arts it specifically means an audition where a musician plays an instrument for a jury. The mention of die erste Probe (the first rehearsal) makes it clear this is a musical setting.
Why use wäre here instead of the regular present tense ist?
wäre is the Subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II) form of sein (to be), translating to 'would be'. The speaker uses it because they are talking about a hypothetical scenario—imagining how hard the audition and rehearsal would be if they were to actually happen, rather than stating a concrete fact.
