Questions & Answers about Angesichts des Rücktritts wird die Einweihung nicht stattfinden.
Why does Rücktritts have an -s at the end?
The preposition angesichts (in view of / given) requires the genitive case. Since der Rücktritt is a masculine noun, its article changes to des and it takes the -s ending in the genitive.
Is angesichts only used for negative situations like a resignation?
Not necessarily, though it often appears in serious, formal, or analytical contexts like news reports. It translates to "in view of" or "given," so you can also use it positively, such as angesichts des Erfolgs (given the success).
Why is wird placed right after Rücktritts instead of after the subject die Einweihung?
This is the classic V2 (verb-second) rule in action. The entire prepositional phrase Angesichts des Rücktritts occupies the first position in the sentence. Therefore, the conjugated verb wird must take the second position, pushing the subject die Einweihung to the third position.
Why is nicht placed right before stattfinden?
When negating an entire action or verb phrase, nicht tends to go as far to the end of the clause as possible. Because stattfinden is an infinitive pushed to the very end by the future tense verb wird, nicht sits immediately in front of it.
