Questions & Answers about Das Institut meldet, dass die virtuelle Realität den Unterricht verbessern werde.
Why is it werde instead of wird in this sentence?
Because the sentence uses reported speech. The institute is making a claim about the future. To show that we are just reporting their claim without confirming it as a fact, we use the Konjunktiv I form werde instead of the standard indicative form wird.
Why does werde come at the very end of the sentence?
The second part of the sentence is a subordinate clause introduced by dass (that). Subordinate clauses push the conjugated verb to the very end of the sentence. Here, the conjugated verb is the helping verb werde, so it must come after the infinitive verbessern.
Could we use würde here instead of werde?
You might hear native speakers use würde colloquially, but in standard written German, werde is correct here. We only replace Konjunktiv I with Konjunktiv II (like würde) when the Konjunktiv I form is identical to the regular present tense. Since werde (Konjunktiv I) is clearly distinct from wird (indicative), no substitute is needed.
Why does den Unterricht translate to 'the class'? Isn't 'class' usually die Klasse?
Die Klasse refers to the group of students themselves (e.g., 'The class is noisy'). Der Unterricht refers to the actual teaching, instruction, or the lesson taking place. Since virtual reality improves the educational experience rather than the group of people, Unterricht is the most accurate word here.
