Questions & Answers about Gemäß dem Betriebsrat sind die Helme zu teuer.
Could I put gemäß after the noun instead of before it?
Yes! Gemäß is a flexible preposition that can go either before or after its noun. So you could also say Dem Betriebsrat gemäß sind die Helme zu teuer. Both versions mean the exact same thing and are widely used.
Why is it dem Betriebsrat instead of der Betriebsrat?
The preposition gemäß always forces the noun into the dative case. Because Betriebsrat is a masculine noun (der Betriebsrat), its article changes to dem in the dative.
Why is the verb sind right after Betriebsrat?
In German, the conjugated verb must always take the second position in a main clause. The entire phrase Gemäß dem Betriebsrat counts as a single block that takes up the first position, so the verb sind must come immediately after it to take position two.
What exactly is a Betriebsrat?
It translates to 'works council.' In German-speaking countries, a Betriebsrat is an elected group of employees that represents the staff and negotiates with management about workplace conditions. It is a compound word made of der Betrieb (the company or business) and der Rat (the council).
