Questions & Answers about Der Sprecher versichert, der Hersteller habe das Problem gelöst.
Why is it habe here instead of hat?
habe is the Konjunktiv I (Present Subjunctive) form of haben for the third-person singular (er/sie/es). We use it here to indicate reported speech—the speaker is reporting what the manufacturer claims, rather than stating it as an absolute fact of their own.
Why isn't there a dass (that) connecting the two halves of the sentence?
In German reported speech, you can often leave out dass. When you drop it, the reported clause uses normal main-clause word order, so the verb stays in the second position (der Hersteller habe...). If you included dass, the verb would be forced to the very end: ... dass der Hersteller das Problem gelöst habe.
How do we form the past tense in reported speech, like "has solved" here?
To report an action that already happened, you use the Konjunktiv I form of the helping verb (in this case, habe) combined with the past participle at the end of the clause (gelöst). This is exactly like forming the normal conversational past (Perfekt), just swapping the regular helping verb for its Konjunktiv I equivalent!
Why does the main verb versichert stay in the normal present tense?
Because versichert (assures) is the action happening right now in reality. The speaker is stating as a fact that the spokesperson is giving this assurance. Only the content of what is being assured (der Hersteller habe...) goes into the Konjunktiv I to show it is a reported claim.
