Questions & Answers about Anna ist extrovertiert. Dagegen bist du introvertiert.
Why is the word order dagegen bist du and not dagegen du bist?
Dagegen is an adverbial connector, which means it counts as the first element (Position 1) in the sentence. Because German requires the conjugated verb to be in Position 2, the verb bist must come immediately after dagegen. This pushes the subject du into the third position.
Can I put dagegen somewhere else in the sentence?
Yes! Because dagegen is an adverb, it is flexible. If you prefer to start the sentence with the subject, you can move dagegen to the middle of the clause. It would look like this: Du bist dagegen introvertiert. Notice that the verb bist firmly stays in the second position.
Could I just use aber instead of dagegen here?
You could, but they affect the grammar slightly differently. Dagegen is perfect here because it strongly highlights a direct contrast (extroverted vs. introverted). If you were to use aber (but), remember that aber takes up "Position 0" because it is a coordinating conjunction. The word order would then be: Aber du bist introvertiert.
Can I combine these two sentences into one by using a comma?
Yes, you can absolutely write: Anna ist extrovertiert, dagegen bist du introvertiert. In English, joining two full sentences with just a comma and a word like "however" or "dagegen" is often considered a punctuation error (a comma splice). In German, this is completely correct and very common!
