Questions & Answers about Die Wahl des neuen Parlaments ist morgen.
Why does the adjective neu end in -en instead of -es here?
This is the genitive case at work! The phrase des neuen Parlaments means "of the new parliament". After a definite article in the genitive case (like des or der), the adjective always takes the -en ending, regardless of the noun's gender.
Why is an -s added to the end of Parlament?
Parlament is a neuter noun (das Parlament). When masculine or neuter nouns are used in the genitive case, they almost always add an -s or -es to the end of the word. Feminine and plural nouns do not get this extra letter.
Why does des neuen Parlaments come after die Wahl?
In modern German, a genitive phrase almost always comes directly after the noun it describes or belongs to. Just like in the English "the election of the new parliament", the main noun (die Wahl) comes first, followed by the possessing phrase.
Could I say Die Wahl von dem neuen Parlament instead?
Yes, absolutely! Using von plus the dative case (vom neuen Parlament) means the exact same thing and is very common in everyday spoken German. However, the genitive case used in this sentence is considered better style for written German, such as in news reports.
