Questions & Answers about Warum unterhalten sich die Gäste mit dem Chef?
Why do we need the word sich in this sentence?
The verb here is sich unterhalten, which is a reflexive verb meaning "to chat" or "to converse". If you leave out the sich, the base verb unterhalten means "to entertain". So, you can think of it as the guests entertaining themselves by talking!
Why is it dem Chef instead of der Chef or den Chef?
The preposition mit (with) always forces the noun that follows into the dative case. Since Chef is a masculine noun (der Chef), the article changes to dem in the dative.
Does Chef mean the guests are talking to the cook?
No, Chef is a common "false friend" for English speakers! In German, it actually means "boss" or "manager", not a person who cooks food. If they were talking to the cook, the word would be Koch.
Could I say Warum unterhalten die Gäste sich mit dem Chef? instead?
Yes, you can! In a question, when the subject is a noun (like die Gäste), the reflexive pronoun sich can go either immediately after the verb or immediately after the subject. Both are correct and sound completely natural.
