Questions & Answers about Wann ist die Hochzeit? Sie ist im August.
Why does the second sentence start with Sie when the English translation says "It"?
In German, pronouns must match the gender of the noun they replace. Since Hochzeit (wedding) is feminine (die Hochzeit), you use the feminine pronoun sie to refer to it. You would only use es (it) if the noun were neuter.
Why does the sentence use im August instead of just in August?
When talking about months and seasons in German, you must use im, which is a contraction of in dem ("in the"). So, Germans literally say "in the August".
Does the use of dem in im August mean the month is masculine?
Exactly! All months of the year, as well as seasons and days of the week, are masculine in German. Because of this, months and seasons always take the contraction im, while days of the week take am (short for an dem).
How can I easily remember the word Hochzeit?
It helps to look at its two parts: hoch means "high" and Zeit means "time." A wedding is literally a "high time" or a grand festival!
