Questions & Answers about Ich lerne schnell.
Why does the verb end in "-e" here?
The dictionary form of the verb "to learn" is lernen. When you use ich (I), you remove the -en ending and add an -e. This gives us ich lerne.
The translation is "quickly", but doesn't schnell just mean "quick"?
In German, you do not need a special ending like the English "-ly" to talk about how an action is done. The exact same word, schnell, is used for both "quick" and "quickly".
Can this also mean "I am learning quickly"?
Yes! German does not have a separate tense for ongoing actions like English does with "am learning". Ich lerne covers both "I learn" and "I am learning".
If I wanted to emphasize "quickly" and put it at the start, how would the sentence change?
German uses the V2 rule, meaning the verb must stay in the second position of a main statement. If you move schnell to the front, the subject and verb must swap places to keep the verb second: Schnell lerne ich.
