In German main sentences, the verb must always be in the second position (this is called the V2 rule). Because we started the sentence with the word Hier (Here) in position 1, the verb spielt has to take position 2. That pushes the subject der Hund into position 3.

Why does the verb end in -t (spielt) instead of -en (spielen)?

Spielen is the dictionary form of the verb (to play). When we use it with a third-person singular subject like der Hund (the dog), we drop the -en and add a -t. This is just like saying 'he plays' in English instead of 'he play'.

If I wanted to replace der Hund with a pronoun, which one would I use?

You would use er (he). In German, nouns have grammatical genders. Because the word for dog is masculine (der Hund), we replace it with the masculine pronoun er, even if we don't know the actual biological sex of the animal.

The English translation says 'often plays', but the German says spielt... oft. Why is the order different?

In English, adverbs like 'often' usually go before the main verb. In German, because the conjugated verb must lock into the second position, the adverb oft comes after it.
