Questions & Answers about Hier ist das Buch.
The current lesson is about ein and eine (a/an). How would I say "Here is a book" instead?
You would say Hier ist ein Buch. Because Buch (book) is a neuter noun, it uses the indefinite article ein for "a". If it were a feminine noun, you would use eine.
Why do we use das for "the" in this sentence?
In German, every noun has a grammatical gender: masculine, feminine, or neuter. The word Buch is neuter, so it uses the neuter definite article das for "the". You will always see it as das Buch.
Why does the verb ist come right after Hier?
In standard German statements, the verb is always the second idea in the sentence. Since this sentence starts with the location word Hier (Here) in position one, the verb ist (is) must immediately follow it in position two. The subject das Buch then comes after the verb.
