Questions & Answers about Der Mann ist hier.
Why is it der Mann and not die Mann or das Mann?
In German, every noun has a grammatical gender: masculine, feminine, or neuter. Because Mann (man) is a masculine noun, it uses the masculine word for "the", which is der.
Why do we use ist for the verb?
ist is the form of the verb sein (to be) that goes with third-person singular subjects like "he", "she", "it", or in this case, a single person like "the man". It translates exactly to the English "is".
If I wanted to replace Der Mann with a pronoun to say "He is here", which one would I use?
You would use er (he), making the sentence Er ist hier. Because Mann is a masculine noun (using der), it is replaced by the masculine pronoun er.
Why is Mann capitalized?
In German, all nouns (words for people, places, things, or ideas) are always capitalized, no matter where they appear in a sentence. Since Mann (man) is a noun, it must start with a capital letter.
