The Modal Particle schon
You likely know schon as the translation for "already." However, German speakers frequently use it as a modal particle — a small word dropped into a sentence to add emotional flavor.
Depending on the context, schon changes the tone of your sentence to express reassurance, probability, or impatience.
Reassurance and Probability
Insert schon into a sentence to calm someone down and express confidence that things will turn out well, similar to "surely," "I'm sure," or "don't worry." This reassuring schon is very common when making predictions using the future tense (werden).
| It will surely be fine, just take a deep breath! | Das wird schon, atme einfach tief durch! |
| You will surely make a good impression. | Du wirst schon einen guten Eindruck machen. |
It can also reassure someone that a negative outcome won't happen by pairing it with nicht:

Impatience and Urging
When paired with a command, schon completely flips its mood. Instead of being comforting, it expresses impatience or urgency, matching the English "Come on!"
