The Adversative Connector gleichwohl
When contrasting two ideas in everyday speech, you often use trotzdem (nevertheless). In formal or elevated German, you can express this same contrast using the adverb gleichwohl.

Because gleichwohl is an adverb, placing it at the beginning of a clause takes up Position 1. The conjugated verb must immediately follow in Position 2, pushing the subject after the verb.
- Fact: Die Wetterfront ist bedrohlich.
- Contrast: Gleichwohl (Position 1) + jagen (Verb in Position 2) + die Sturmjäger (Subject) + den Tornado.
