Questions & Answers about Le climat est très froid, pourtant l'animal nocturne survit.
What is the difference between using pourtant here instead of just saying mais (but)?
While mais simply means but, pourtant is stronger and translates closer to yet or even so. It highlights a logical contradiction or a surprising outcome. Here, it emphasizes that the animal's survival is genuinely unexpected because the climate is so cold.
Could pourtant be placed somewhere else in this sentence?
Yes! While it works perfectly at the beginning of the second clause, you will also often see pourtant placed directly after the conjugated verb. You could say: l'animal nocturne survit pourtant.
Is survit a regular verb?
Why does the adjective nocturne come after animal?
In French, most adjectives are placed after the noun they describe. This rule is especially strict for adjectives that classify a noun into a factual or scientific category, such as nocturne (nocturnal), marin (marine), or sauvage (wild).
