Breakdown of Le tapis est vert.
Questions & Answers about Le tapis est vert.
Why does tapis end in an 's' if we are only talking about one rug?
Some French words naturally end in an -s in their singular form. Because it already ends in an -s, the plural spelling doesn't change: le tapis (the rug) and les tapis (the rugs) are spelled the exact same way. You can only tell if it is plural by looking at the word for "the" (le versus les). If I want to reply "Mine is green", how do I use a possessive pronoun here?
Because tapis is masculine and singular, you need the masculine singular pronoun le mien. You would replace le tapis and simply say: Le mien est vert. How would I say "Hers is green" referring to a rug?
You would say Le sien est vert. Remember that in French, possessive pronouns match the gender of the thing being owned, not the owner. Since tapis is masculine, you use the masculine le sien, regardless of whether the rug belongs to a man or a woman. Why is vert spelled without an 'e' at the end?
French adjectives must match the noun they describe. Since le tapis is masculine, we use the masculine form vert (where the "t" is silent). If you were talking about a feminine noun, like a car (la voiture), you would add an -e to make it verte (and you would pronounce the "t"). Learn Le tapis est vert and more in French
