Questions & Answers about Je regarde la pluie et je m'ennuie.
How would I say "I am watching nothing" using the grammar from this lesson?
Why is it je m'ennuie instead of just j'ennuie?
To mean "to be bored", French uses the reflexive verb s'ennuyer (literally "to bore oneself"). The m' is the "myself" part, which is required here. Without it, j'ennuie would mean you are boring someone else!
The translation says "I am watching," but doesn't je regarde mean "I watch"?
It means both! French only has one present tense. Je regarde translates to either "I watch" or "I am watching" depending on what makes the most sense in English context.
The infinitive is s'ennuyer. Why is it spelled ennuie here?
For verbs ending in -uyer, the y changes to an i in the present tense for all forms except nous and vous. So s'ennuyer becomes je m'ennuie.
