When do I use tu for "you"?
In French, tu is the informal and singular word for "you". You use it when talking to exactly one person who you know well, like a friend, a family member, or a child.
Do I pronounce the "s" at the end of es?
No, the "s" is completely silent. The word es is pronounced with a short "eh" sound, very similar to the "e" in the English word "pet".
Is es the only way to say "are"?
No, es is specifically the form of the verb être (to be) that matches tu. If you are talking about someone else, the verb changes its spelling. For example, with il (he) or elle (she), you must use est.
I thought "here" was ici. Does là mean "here" or "there"?
Strictly speaking, ici means "here" and là means "there". However, in everyday spoken French, people use là for both! If you want to say that you are present in a room, you will almost always say you are là.
