### The independent subjunctive

You already know that the subjunctive mood usually lives in subordinate clauses, following a main clause and the conjunction **que** (like *il est important que...*). 

When emotions run high, French lets you drop the main clause entirely. Starting a sentence directly with **que** followed by a subject and a **subjunctive** verb creates an *independent* subjunctive clause.

This expresses strong disbelief, indignation, or shock, translating to English exclamations like "That I should...!" or "To think that he would...!"

These dramatic outbursts always end with an exclamation mark and often stand alone as a gasp of disbelief.

If you're too furious to stop there, follow the independent subjunctive with a second sentence stating exactly how you feel.
