Emphatic independent subjunctive (que je fasse ça !)

Reality TV thrives on shocking twists, broken alliances, and ultimate betrayals. When a contestant crosses the line, you need a way to express pure, unadulterated outrage.

The independent subjunctive

You already know that the subjunctive mood usually lives in subordinate clauses, following a main clause and the conjunction que (like il est important que...).

When emotions run high, French lets you drop the main clause entirely. Starting a sentence directly with que followed by a subject and a subjunctive verb creates an independent subjunctive clause.

This expresses strong disbelief, indignation, or shock, translating to English exclamations like "That I should...!" or "To think that he would...!"

That I should eliminate the hypocrite!
Que j'élimine l'hypocrite !
That he would stab me in the back with such audacity!
Qu'il me poignarde dans le dos avec une telle audace !

These dramatic outbursts always end with an exclamation mark and often stand alone as a gasp of disbelief.

If you're too furious to stop there, follow the independent subjunctive with a second sentence stating exactly how you feel.

That she would take revenge! It is scandalous!
Qu'elle se venge ! C'est scandaleux !
That you would eliminate me! This choice is scandalous!
Que tu m'élimines ! Ce choix est scandaleux !
That we would forgive this hypocrite! Never!
Que nous pardonnions à cet hypocrite ! Jamais !

Use this structure anytime a simple statement of fact isn't enough to capture the audacity of your enemies!
