Questions & Answers about Sähköposti loppuu näin: ystävällisin terveisin.
Why do ystävällisin and terveisin end in "-in" instead of a more common case like the adessive?
They are in the instructive case, a rare grammatical case in modern Finnish mostly found in fixed plural expressions. It usually translates to "with" or "by means of," so ystävällisin terveisin literally means "with friendly greetings." You will also see this case in phrases like omin silmin (with one's own eyes).
Could I use the verb lopettaa instead of loppuu here?
No, because loppua is an intransitive verb, meaning the subject just does the action itself without a direct object: "the email ends." If you used lopettaa (to end or finish something), you would need someone to do the ending, such as Lopetan sähköpostin näin (I end the email like this).
Doesn't näin usually mean "I saw"?
It can, but here näin is an adverb meaning "like this" or "in this way." It is related to the pronoun tämä (this). While it looks exactly like the past tense of nähdä (to see), the context makes it clear that we are talking about how the email ends, not someone seeing something.
